Background

The total food waste in Hawaii is estimated at over $1 billion per year (https://www.honolulu.gov/opala/recycling/waste-prevention/food-waste-prevention). It also includes the foods from consumers, but also from restaurants, shops, or grocery stores. Besides that information, as a student, it is difficult for us to keep up focusing on studying and having a healthy diet due to the time consumption, and also the financial situation. I was thinking there could be something that can help both of the problems.

The problem

There is no such application that can directly help food waste prevention for restaurants, shops, or grocery stores in Hawaii.  Finding solutions for helping food waste prevention that restaurants, shops, or grocery stores can help food waste prevention. However, there are a lot of students who are in need of a healthy diet. The application can be the way to solve those two problems.

Methodology

I conducted two different ways including user interviews and competitive analysis. My focus was on individuals living in Hawaii and gaining insights into their attitudes toward food waste. Additionally, I explored the relationship between food waste and grocery shopping practices among this population.

Competitive Analysis

Key Insights

My research revealed that individuals living alone in Hawaii often struggle to purchase appropriate amounts of groceries, resulting in wasted food. Many expressed difficulties in finding appropriately sized food items at stores and restaurants, leading to overbuying and eventual waste. Participants also mentioned that an app that encourages them to reduce food waste would be motivating and beneficial to their shopping habits.

Solutions

  • How might we help Noa and Isabella to motivate constantly to use the application?

  • How might we create an efficient way that users can find cheaper deal foods?

Conducted in-person

After conducting the usability test, I discovered that while the users were able to complete the tasks, they faced difficulty in reading certain titles displayed on the screen.

Users did not notice the error notification, so I edited the style and added the icon to make it look more consistent.

The title section proved to be a source of confusion for users who experienced difficulty distinguishing between meal kits and non-meal kit products. Consequently, I undertook a redesign of the color scheme, to enhance the visibility and prominence of the meal kit items.

Next Steps

My next step would be to conduct further testing and continue with iterative improvements. Additionally, I would seek to delve deeper into the business aspects of the project, in order to generate additional ideas and insights that can enhance its effectiveness and overall success.

Learnings

During the course of this project, albeit within a relatively brief timeframe, I was able to enhance my proficiency in using various design tools, as well as develop a more efficient approach to conceptualizing and implementing various app functions.
